“I want to fail”

kwb2js14srjgox9zzlmcWait! I know what you’re thinking. I must have definitely lost it this time. Yes, I said it. “I want to fail”. A very profound statement. Four words that really just sound like a deathtrap. But really, these are four words that when spoken to me and explained, changed my whole perspective on life and how I approach everything.

Last October I believe, while speaking with one of my supervisors at work, discussing new projects and practices we could implement, she said, “you know what Nashelle? I want to try stuff and I want to fail”. And then she elaborated and highlighted the fact that she didn’t want us to run away from trying new things for fear that they wouldn’t work. She stated that she wanted us to explore and try things and if they didn’t work, well, we’d just view it as a lesson and cross it off our list of things that we shouldn’t do.

And that is the attitude that I have learnt to embrace since then. I want to fail. I want to try things in this life and I want to fail at them. We often think that success is constantly winning. Constantly having things work out the way we want or the way we plan. But have you ever considered the fact that success can be found in the midst of failure?

Strange concept but let me explain. By failing, you’re learning. You’re learning that “hey, maybe this method is not the best one”. Or that “hey, this is not my strength.” And if failing means learning, gaining a lesson is winning. Gaining a lesson is success because knowledge is power.

Imagine if a lot of people we know who have accomplished great things didn’t step out and fail a couple of times. We would never have half of the great inventions that today make our lives way easier.

That’s the attitude I want you to embrace for 2018 and beyond. Failure can be a win if you let it. Allow yourself to try new things and to fail at them. No, you’re not working to fail. Instead, you’re stepping out of your comfort zone and giving it your best shot. And after doing that, if you fail, find the win in that situation. Find the lesson.

One of my favourite quotes states “If you don’t go after what you want, you’ll never have it. If you don’t ask, the answer is always no. If you don’t step forward, you’re always in the same place.”- (Nora Roberts)

I challenge you in this new year to step forward. To step out of your comfort zone and into your greatness. To be open to life and all it entails. To work to be successful but to accept failure gracefully!

  1. I understand exactly what you mean. I think my biggest lesson of 2017 was learning how to fail (and trust me I failed a lot). It helped me to understand so many things and as hard as it was to experience, I would not have traded this experience for anything ( not trying to fail this semester though, I’ve done enough failing to last a lifetime).
